Starting pitcher Luis Severino played for the New York Mets in 2024 after spending the previous eight years with the New York Yankees. Could a reunion be brewing for Sevy and the Bombers this winter?
Upon getting introduced to Mets media members in January, Severino was honest when asked about leaving the only organization he played for. He simply said, “I thought I was going to die a Yankee.”
Severino struggled to stay healthy for the Bombers from 2021-23, tossing 197 1/3 total innings. His 2023 campaign was a disaster, resulting in a 6.65 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in 89 1/3 frames. The right-hander turned things around for the Mets while playing under a one-year, $13 million deal. He posted an 11-7 record with a 3.91 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 161 strikeouts in 182 innings.
As Sevy hits free agency once again, he’ll be hoping to cash in on a multi-year deal. All four MLB Trade Rumors writers were split on their predictions regarding where the right-hander would land ahead of 2025. Steve Adams believes Severino will remain in New York but switch back to the Bronx on a three-year, $51 million deal.
The Yankees’ current rotation mix includes Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, Clarke Schmidt, Marcus Stroman, Luis Gil and Nestor Cortes. There could also be some changes coming for this group, as Cortes has been viewed as a top trade candidate.
Now that Cole’s immediate future with the club is secured, Cashman can investigate other possibilities to fortify the rotation.
