Woman Counts How Many Times Kids Say Mom in One Day—Final Number Is Wild

A mom has showcased how a mother’s work is never truly done, as she counted the number of times she heard her name in just one day.

Jacki, 34, lives in Melbourne, Australia, and is a stay-at-home mom to two children: Jessie, four, and two-year-old Andy.

And while many mothers to young kids may wonder how many times they’ve heard the word ‘mom’ that day, Jacki, who only gave her first name, decided to put it to test.

In a video to her TikTok account @flownoak on May 27, she showed a hand-held click counter, and told the camera: “Let’s see how many times I hear the word ‘mum’ in one day.”

And just as she finishes speaking, one of her young children pipes up: “Mum,” starting the tally.

As Jacki told Newsweek: “I did it purely out of curiosity because it felt like each day the word ‘Mum’ was being used so frequently.”

Jacki checked in multiple times throughout the day with updates: at 8:50am, she had heard it 88 times. By lunchtime, it was 127 times—but she said her kids were taking a nap, so the tally would get “a little bit of a break.”

Jacki begins the tally, and, right, shows the number at 181 times she’s heard her name.

By the time the children were both in bed, the tally was at a whopping 234.

“We wonder why mums are sick of hearing their name,” Jacki told the camera, showing the final result—created between 7am and 8pm.

Jacki then added: “I also just did some quick math, and if that’s the daily average number, in one year I’m hearing it 85,410 times.”

She told Newsweek: “I did think the number would be higher on the daily count but when I totaled it over the yearly amount, it sunk in that it was a lot.

“Imagine going to work and your boss calling your name that many times, interrupting you so frequently, you’d get a bit frustrated!”

While every child is different, babies usually begin stringing syllables together that sound like “mama” and “dada” by seven months. By around the one-year mark, they will likely start to use the words in the correct context, according to a medically-reviewed report fromThe Bump.

The order in which a baby says “mama” or “dada” first is more likely to stem from whether the baby prefers saying “ma” or “da” sounds, rather than which caregiver they prefer.

In Jacki’s video, it’s clear mom is the winner. And there was a big reaction to her post, which has been viewed more than 800,000 times, as one commenter admitted: “Actually less than I thought. Feels like a million times!”

“Thank you for this,” another said. “I have a set of twins and was just wondering how many ‘mummys’ do I get in a day since I got sick of it.”

“I bet my son could do 200+ by lunch,” another guessed, as one said simply: “It’s not easy being a mum.”

Other commenters wondered how often a man might hear ‘dad’ in a day, with some asking Jacki to make a follow-up video.

But Jacki told Newsweek, “I think people are anticipating it to be a much lower number when compared to Mum, but that’s not what the video was for.

“I wasn’t complaining about how frequently I’m called, but more so wanted to highlight a fact of the job I have, looking after my beautiful children, which can be challenging at times because it is so repetitive but that’s okay!”
