Why you should think twice before taking viral work outfit advice

A content creator has called out some influencers for promoting office outfits that are unrealistic and inappropriate for many corporate environments.

Danira (@dresswithdanni), 36, a fashion-focused content creator, shared her take on TikTok, where it garnered 37,500 views and 2,134 likes.

“I had just scrolled past a few workwear videos from influencers that I just knew had never been inside of an office before. From super short skirts to low-cut necklines, or just generally impractical outfits (that would maybe work if your office was a movie set) — it just doesn’t translate into the everyday life and world of a nine-to-five girlie,” she told Newsweek.

In the video, she explains that while the looks may be stylish, they often fail to consider the realities of office dress codes and temperature extremes.

According to the millennial fashionista, in the summer, office air conditioning is often on so a wool or cashmere cardigan is necessary, while in the winter, excessive heating means layers are essential.

She explained that these nuances aren’t something you can guess — you have to have been “in the trenches” of office life for at least five years to truly understand what works. Danira isn’t saying influencer outfits aren’t cute; she’s just pointing out that experienced professionals can always tell when they aren’t practical.

Drawing from her own extensive experience in various roles, including legal assistant, marketing director, and analyst, Danira emphasizes the importance of practical yet stylish office attire.

Danira’s Formula for the Perfect Office Fit:

  • A simple base layer: a nice, simple top to build the outfit around.
  • A flowy cardigan: essential for temperature control, easy to remove if warm and cozy enough when cold.
  • A good trouser: tailored and comfortable, ideally with a stretchy waistband for ease of movement.
  • Comfortable shoes: her go-to choices are classic loafers or Adidas Gazelles for all-day wear.
  • Accessories: often overlooked but crucial, including a watch, belt, and earrings to elevate the overall look.

Expert Weighs in on Office Fashion Reality

Jennifer Johnson, founder of True Fashionistas, a resale store in Florida, shared her insight with Newsweek. She agrees that many influencer office outfits feel more like playing dress-up than reflecting real corporate life.

“The ‘influencer’ where you can tell they are just ‘playing office’ are the ones that wear the sky-high heels, tight pencil skirts with their hair up in the most perfect bun, etc. I think you get the picture,” she said.

Johnson highlights the practical realities that influencers often overlook: “Many people that work in an office setting have to park a mile away (so they wear tennis shoes into the office and change), they have to layer with a jacket and sweater for the colder climates, and usually are carrying a backpack or large tote and lunch box. That is real-life office.”

When it comes to dressing appropriately for work, Johnson suggests prioritizing comfort without sacrificing professionalism.

Jennifer Johnson’s Advice for Office Attire:

  • A nice dress: with a cardigan or blazer depending on formality.
  • Skirt or pants: paired with a button-down and a cardigan for versatility.
  • Layering options: a formal blazer for structured environments or a refined moto jacket for a more relaxed setting.
  • Sensible shoes: while 4-inch heels may work for some, most prefer flats or kitten heels for practicality.
