A gunman with a history of mental health issues killed four people, including a New York City police officer, at a midtown Manhattan office building that houses some of the country’s top financial firms and the NFL, before killing himself, authorities said.
Police, citing preliminary information, identified the gunman as Shane Devon Tamura, 27, of Las Vegas. He died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch told a news conference.
A photograph posted online showed a Black man carrying an M4 rifle, striding along a city street. He was wearing sunglasses, a blue jacket, black trousers and sneakers.
Police said the gunman was believed to have acted alone.
“Mr. Tamura has a documented mental health history,” Tisch said, citing information from Las Vegas police. She did not elaborate.
“His motives are still under investigation and we are working to understand why he targeted this particular location,” the commissioner added.
CNN cited law enforcement officials as saying Tamura was born in Hawaii but later moved to Las Vegas. In his youth, he was a competitive football player.
Tamura entered the lobby of the commercial office building while “spraying it with gunfire” and killing three people, Tisch said, and that a woman and the shooter were found dead in a hallway on the building’s 33rd floor.
Police watched video to track Tamura back to his BMW vehicle, which he double parked and exited alone, and where police found a rifle case with ammunition, a pistol and medication, the commissioner added.
CNN reported that the man, who had no significant criminal background, had a concealed-carry license for a handgun as well as an expired private investigator license in Nevada.
This is a developing story that will be updated with additional information.
