Warriors Receive Major Update on Jonathan Kuminga Situation

Jonathan Kuminga

Throughout the majority of the NBA offseason, the Golden State Warriors and Jonathan Kuminga have been a major storyline.

Kuminga is currently a restricted free agent. He has yet to work out a new deal with the Warriors and while other teams have shown interest in him, there has been minimal movement in his free agency.

Golden State has had to put other moves on hold until it can figure out what to do with Kuminga. The team has been open to the idea of him returning, but that doesn’t seem to be a realistic long-term fit.

While the situation has remained quiet, a new update has been provided.

According to a report from ESPN’s Anthony Slater, the Warriors and Kuminga have had renewed conversations of late.

“Well, there’s been renewed conversations between the two sides,” Slater said. “There’s dialogue, but as you all know, talking doesn’t necessarily equal movement. They’ve shared contract concepts and opinions about the whole thing between each other this last week, dating back to last weekend.”

Granted, the two sides talking doesn’t necessarily mean progress. It’s just as possible that the talks die off without anything getting accomplished.

That being said, Kuminga will need to make a decision at some point. He could simply choose to accept his qualifying offer and enter free agency next offseason as an unrestricted free agent.

During the 2024-25 NBA season with Golden State, Kuminga had a roller coaster year. There were moments where he linked like a potential star and others where he didn’t play a minute due to Steve Kerr’s decision.

In the 47 games and 10 starts he appeared in last year, Kuminga averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 0.8 steals per game. He also shot 45.4 percent and knocked down 30.5 percent of his three-point attempts.

At just 22 years old, Kuminga is a very interesting player. He could become a legitimate star if placed in the right situation. Whether or not that situation will be with the Warriors remains to be seen.

Expect to continue hearing more rumors and updates about Kuminga and Golden State. For now, the two sides are talking again and it will be interesting to see if any progress is made towards a resolution to the situation.
