Coors Field is a place where wacky baseball occurrences tend to crop up, and the Toronto Blue Jays were on the positive side of one this week.

In a three-game series against the hapless Colorado Rockies, the Blue Jays put the hammer down. In a three-game sweep, the first-place Jays took home victories by scores of 15-1, 10-4, and 20-1.

Everyone on the offense was pitching in, and at the end of it all, the Blue Jays managed to set a record.

According to MLB.com, the Blue Jays’ 63 hits in the series broke the record for any team in the modern era during a three-game set. The record they surpassed was set by the Boston Red Sox, who had 62 against the St. Louis Browns in 1950.

In the aftermath of the series, Blue Jays superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who had eight of those 63 hits, including two home runs, spoke about his ballclub’s torrid stretch in the middle of a fantastic season.

“It feels great,” Guerrero said through an interpreter, per Shi Davidi of Sportsnet. “Everybody’s doing their part, offense has been great. We’ve got to play everybody hard and we showed that the past three days.”

Meanwhile, starting pitcher Kevin Gausman, who got his eighth win of the season on Wednesday, was flabbergasted by what his team accomplished.

“We just broke the record for most hits in a series. Averaging 20-plus hits a game in a three-game series is pretty absurd,” Gausman said, per Thomas Harding and Keegan Matheson of MLB.com.

“I don’t think you can say anything else. The offense has been exceptional.”

Most importantly of all, the Blue Jays picked up a game on the Boston Red Sox and now lead the American League East by four games. They’re trying to flag down their first division title in a decade, so every hit is a building block.
