Texas House Democrats who fled their home state to block the GOP’s efforts to redraw the congressional map have announced their list of demands which must be met for them to return.
The lawmakers said in a Thursday statement that they would return and break the quorum under two conditions. The first is that Texas House Republicans must adjourn their first special session on Friday—something House Speaker Dustin Burrows originally announced last week. Secondly, that California introduces plans to redraw congressional maps in their state to neutralize the five additional House seats that would be gained by Republicans in Texas.
“As Democrats across the nation join our fight to cause these maps to fail their political purpose, we’re prepared to bring this battle back to Texas under the right conditions and to take this fight to the courts,” Texas House Democratic Caucus Chair Gene Wu said in a statement.
