Russell Wilson Makes His Thoughts on Jameis Winston Clear After Benching

The New York Giants made two major moves following the team’s loss to the Chicago Bears.

New York first fired head coach Brian Daboll and announced Mike Kafka will take over interim head coaching duties. Kafka’s first big decision after moving from offensive coordinator to interim head coach was to bench quarterback Russell Wilson in favor of Jameis Winston, who will likely get the start against the Green Bay Packers as rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart remains in concussion protocol.

After being benched, Wilson made it clear he doesn’t plan to ask for his release from the team. “I want to see it through. I haven’t asked for my release or anything like that,” he said. “I want to be there. But for me, I just want to get better every day. I still want to keep playing football. I love it, obviously, and I feel like I still got it.”

When asked for his initial thoughts after being benched Wilson praised Winston’s hard work and knows the journeyman quarterback will be ready to go.

“Obviously, I want to play, but Jameis has worked his butt off to give him a great opportunity. He’s a guy that’s played in this league for a long time and he’s one of my closest friends,” he said. “I know he’ll do a great job and I’ll help him prepare the best way possible…I know with Jameis, though, he works his butt off and we have a great dialogue. He’s a great teammate and his work ethic is phenomenal.”

Winston hasn’t thrown a pass yet this season and is set to face a stout defense in the Packers.
