Jon Heyman of the New York Post recently suggested Boston Red Sox star Alex Bregman would opt out of his contract at the end of the season and pursue a new deal worth at least $200 million.
This report drastically changes the future for the Red Sox, especially since they’re expected to pursue a new deal with Bregman.
With this report in mind, FanSided’s Zachary Rotman recently predicted the Red Sox would cut ties with offseason addition Walker Buehler at the end of this season.

“Most of Boston’s offseason moves have aged tremendously, but the Walker Buehler signing has not. Buehler inked a one-year, $21.05 million deal with Boston, which has a $25 million mutual option for 2026,” Rotman wrote. “There was reason to believe that if he carried his postseason momentum into the 2025 campaign, the Red Sox would be willing to pick up their end of the mutual option. His struggles this year make it almost certain that the team will look to let him walk in free agency.
“Buehler has a 6.12 ERA in 16 starts and 78 innings of work, and the advanced metrics don’t suggest he’s gotten all that unlucky. The Red Sox can get better and cheaper production by rejecting the mutual option and letting Buehler walk.”
Buehler is likely not returning to Boston regardless of Bregman’s contract situation. The righty signed with the Red Sox last offseason and has struggled nearly every time out.
With Bregman’s contract potentially costing the Red Sox $200 million, there’s almost a zero percent chance they will consider accepting their end of Buehler’s mutual option.
