The New York Mets took a huge risk last offseason by letting Pete Alonso test the market in free agency. But the risk paid off because Alonso couldn’t find the deal he was looking for and ended up re-signing with the Mets on a short-term contract.
But after Alonso opted out this winter, he’s a free agent again. He put together a career season this year, which means he’s more likely to land the big contract that he’s been hunting for years.
Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer recently predicted Alonso would sign a massive six-year, $150 million deal to stay with the Mets for years to come.
“Rather than wait for others to do it, the better play for Alonso and Boras is to move quickly to set the market themselves,” Rymer wrote. “This partnership has been going for seven years, and there’s no good reason for it to stop now. The Mets still need Alonso’s right-handed power at first base, and the team can add roughly $100 million in average salary and still not trigger the 2026 luxury tax.”
Alonso is a fan favorite in New York. It would be a huge mistake for the Mets to let his bat and personality leave Queens.
They have the money to make another deal happen. The only issue they could run into is their eagerness to pursue pitching, too.
If the Mets prioritize pitching, they could lose Alonso in their pursuit of a star like Dylan Cease.
