The San Diego Padres seem bound to hunt a few big trade targets at the upcoming deadline. They need to add an outfielder above all else, but it wouldn’t hurt for them to add some pitching, too.
With outfielders like Steven Kwan and Jarren Duran reportedly on their radar, the Padres need to be willing to cut ties with some top prospect talent to land them.
FanSided’s Eric Cole recently predicted the Padres would cut ties with outfield prospect Tirso Ornelas. Ornelas has crushed Triple-A pitching, but struggled in the big leagues. It could be time for a change of scenery.

“Including Ornelas here is more just hoping he gets to a new organization where he could actually get some playing time as opposed to the crowded Padres roster,” Cole wrote. “While the numbers and tools aren’t the loudest with Ornelas, the guy can just hit and could probably help a team right now.
“If AJ Preller finds a real upgrade for left field, catcher, or their rotation, including Ornelas, could give their trade partner a MLB-ready bat and allow San Diego to include lower-level prospects to round a potential deal out.”
Ornelas has been good in Triple-A, but big league pitching seems to be a tick too good for him right now. That doesn’t mean he’s a bust, but he certainly can’t help the Padres win right now.
If San Diego is going to go after an outfielder on the trade market, it would make sense to send an outfield prospect back in return. Using Ornelas in a deal to acquire a big league outfielder makes perfect sense for the Padres.
