Mets’ Stance on Edwin Díaz Revealed After Devin Williams News

Could the New York Mets have the ultimate two-headed monster in the bullpen, or is Edwin Díaz headed elsewhere?

On Monday, The Athletic’s Will Sammon reported that the Mets and two-time All-Star closer Devin Williams were in agreement on a three-year contract. After a rough year with the New York Yankees that saw him lose the closer job on multiple occasions, Williams hopes a trip across town will help him rediscover his dominant form.

Meanwhile, one could logically look at the situation and assume the Mets would be hard-pressed to keep Díaz, their own three-time All-Star closer who opted out of the final two seasons on a five-year contract at the beginning of November. Williams’ agreement is worth over $50 million guaranteed, per Jeff Passan of ESPN.

However, according to multiple reports that quickly surfaced in the wake of the reported agreement with Williams, the Mets are not closing the door on a new deal with Díaz, who has been a Met for the past seven seasons.

Just moments after the breaking news alerts popped up that Williams was in agreement to join the Mets, MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo reported that New York was “still interested” in bringing back Díaz, while Williams is “open to pitching in a setup role.”

Jon Heyman of the New York Post attempted to provide some perspective on the situation as well.

“Mets remain in the mix for Edwin Diaz (Williams isn’t Diaz but he gives them a bit of cover, in case the unpalatable happens and Diaz leaves),” Heyman wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

It’s still entirely legitimate to question whether the Mets will feel comfortable matching whatever deals Díaz winds up finding from other suitors. He’s been linked to a handful of big-market teams, including the two participants in this year’s World Series, the Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Dodgers.
