The New York Mets have nothing but superstars on their minds in free agency this offseason. They’re heavily tied into superstar outfielder Juan Soto as well as top pitchers Blake Snell and Corbin Burnes.
But one of the players they’re very closely connected to, for very good reason, is the longtime fan favorite Met, Pete Alonso.
Alonso, 29, spent the first six years of his big league career with the Mets before entering free agency this winter. During his time in the Big Apple, Alonso slugged 226 home runs in 846 games.
MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand doesn’t seem to think his time with the Mets is over. Feinsand listed Alonso as somebody New York could reunite with this winter.

“Alonso is the biggest name of the Mets’ free agents, and while there has been plenty of chatter about New York making a push for Soto, a reunion with Alonso is definitely in play,” Feinsand wrote. “Alonso has been the face of the franchise for several years, and his big October moments didn’t hurt his cause, either.”
An Alonso reunion with the Mets has been one of the bigger stories over the past few months. The Mets fan base has been aggressively pushing for it, but as everybody knows, money rules everything.
If the Mets sign superstar Juan Soto, it’s unlikely they will find the money to re-sign Alonso. Spotrac projects Alonso to land a contract worth $174 million. A lot of this has to do with the other moves Steve Cohen and the Mets make, but it’s obvious the fan-favorite first baseman is near the top of the priority list.
