A Florida man allegedly fired a handgun at several people following an argument about how many eggs chickens can lay, WPBF reported.
Peter Riera, 44, was taken into custody on multiple charges after firing shots at three people outside Harper’s Pub in Port St. Lucie on Tuesday, the outlet reported. None were hit by the gunshots.
“The shooter evidently raises chickens, and the conversation was about how many eggs chickens can lay. The conversation got heated for whatever reason,” Port St. Lucie Police Master Sergeant and Public Information Officer Dominick Mesiti told the outlet.
Newsweek contacted the Port St. Lucie Police Department for additional information and comment.
Why It Matters
Riera is charged with three counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, four counts of discharging a firearm in public and one count of use of a firearm under the influence of alcohol.
What To Know
Riera is accused of firing four rounds from a .45-caliber Glock outside the bar, which was closed at the time, WPBF reported.
Police said Riera became paranoid after the argument, believing the victims were out to get him, according to the outlet.
“One victim ran out into the roadway trying to get away from the shooter. The other two victims hid. We had several phone calls; the shooter himself called 911,” Mesiti told the outlet.
Police said the victims knew each other and had just met Riera that night. They had all been drinking, WPBF reported.
Police arrested one of the victims on a charge of resisting an officer with violence and another on a charge of resisting an officer without violence, WPBF reported.
Brandon Pace, 24, was arrested after police said he obstructed officers during the investigation and kicked two officers while being detained, WFLX reported. Police said Kayla Damiani, 26, obstructed officers during their investigation while they tried to detain Pace, according to the outlet.
What People Are Saying
Port St. Lucie Police Master Sergeant and Public Information Officer Dominick Mesiti told WPBF: “Arming yourself with a handgun when you’re under the influence is not a good idea. There’s never going to be a good outcome with that.”
