Jets Surprisingly Take Quarterback in First Round of Latest Mock Draft

The NFL draft is in about a month, and mock drafts are continuing to be released all over the internet. One of the recent trends of mock drafts is playing around with where the top quarterbacks go.

In the latest mock draft on NFL.com from Chad Reuter, the New York Jets join the quarterback party by surprisingly drafting quarterback Jaxon Dart with the No. 7 pick.

While the pick would make sense for the Jets if they believe in Dart that much, it would be a surprising one after signing 26-year-old quarterback Justin Fields in free agency.

Normally a team would draft a young quarterback to either start or sit behind a veteran, but unless the team views Fields as an established veteran, this move wouldn’t fit either of those criteria.

The Tennessee Titans and New York Giants also take quarterbacks, selecting Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders respectively.

There has been talk of Sanders potentially falling, so if that were the case, that may be more of an enticing pick for the Jets to go quarterback rather than Dart.

The Jets do have a solid situation for a young quarterback, with new head coach Aaron Glenn coming over from the Detroit Lions, and solid young weapons in Breece Hall at running back and Garrett Wilson at receiver.

While taking a quarterback you believe in is always a good idea (just ask the Atlanta Falcons last year), it is a difficult decision to make for a team with plenty of other more significant needs.

For example, there are multiple good offensive line options that would help much more in the short-term than reaching on a quarterback, as well as offensive weapons, such as tight end Tyler Warren and receiver Tet McMillan.

Those aforementioned players go not long after the Jets at pick No. 7, with top tackles Armand Membou and Will Campbell going at pick 10 and 11, and Warren going at pick 12 after a trade up from the Denver Broncos. Tet McMillan falls to pick No. 18 to the Seattle Seahawks

While it is unlikely the Jets actually take a quarterback, it is certainly possible. It seems more likely that would happen if Shedeur Sanders fell a bit in the draft, but with a potential rapid rise in draft stock for Jaxon Dart, that could be another dark horse option for the Jets.

For now, Justin Fields seems like the starting quarterback for the New York Jets in 2025, but they could add competition for him in the draft, whether in the first round or later in the draft.
