Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy took aim at Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent‘s remarks that “it’s Main Street’s turn” after decades of Wall Street growth.
In an interview Wednesday afternoon with CNN‘s Dana Bash, Portnoy, a two-time President Donald Trump voter, said that his administration shouldn’t treat Wall Street’s turmoil in response to his tariffs as “not a major issue.”
He told Bash, “My big thing is, let’s not pretend it’s not a major issue because it is. Main Street and Wall Street are pretty connected in my book. If the stock market is tanking, we are going to have an economic meltdown over the long term.”
On Wednesday morning, Bessent said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, “For the last four decades, Wall Street has grown wealthier than ever before. And it can continue to grow and do well. But for the next four years, it’s Main Street’s turn.
He continued, “It’s Main Street’s turn to hire workers. It’s Main Street’s turn to drive investment. And it’s Main Street’s turn to restore the American Dream.”
