Cynthia Nixon’s “Make Abortion Great Again” hat has sparked a wave of backlash online.
Newsweek reached out to Nixon’s representative via email for comment on Monday.
The Context
Last week, the House of Representatives passed President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill,” and he signed it into law on Independence Day on Friday.
The bill—which is over 1,000 pages long—aims to extend Trump’s 2017 tax cuts and increase spending for border security and defense. To pay for the costs, significant cuts will be made to health care, like Medicaid, and Planned Parenthood will be affected too.
According to Planned Parenthood’s website, the nonprofit organization “is the nation’s leading provider and advocate of high-quality, affordable sexual and reproductive health care for all people, as well as the nation’s largest provider of sex education.” Their services include safe abortions, contraceptives, STD testing and treatment and more.

What To Know
On Wednesday, Nixon—who is an outspoken critic of Trump—posted a photo of herself to Instagram wearing a hat that read “Make Abortion Great Again.”
The bright red cap appeared to be a play on Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan and his signature piece of merchandise.
“In addition to kicking 17 million Americans off their health care, Trump’s big ugly bill will strip critical funding to @plannedparenthood for non-abortion-related medical care. (And of course abortion is healthcare too!)” the And Just Like That… actress captioned her post. “Call 202-224-3121 and tell your representatives to vote NO on this horrifying bill. #IFightForPP”
