The rankings were bound to have a major shakeup following Oklahoma’s 23-21 win over the Alabama Crimson Tide on the road in Tuscaloosa on Saturday. Alabama was ranked No. 4 before the loss. The Sooners were ranked No. 11.

Alabama suffered its second defeat of the season, but its first in the SEC. Florida State knocked off the Crimson Tide 31-17 in Week 1.

In the new updated CFP rankings, Alabama dropped to No. 10. The Crimson Tide are positioned right behind No. 9 Notre Dame with an 8-2 record after beating then-No. 22 Pittsburgh 37-15 on Saturday.

With the updated CFP bracket, Notre Dame would travel to play No. 8 Oklahoma in the first round. Alabama would travel to play No. 7 Oregon.

Following the updated rankings, college football fans argued about whether Alabama should have been penalized so harshly after losing by two points to Oklahoma. Many thought putting Notre Dame above them was too much.

“Notre Dame being ranked above Alabama & Miami is a joke,” wrote a fan.

“Notre Dame ahead of Alabama is laughably awful,” posted another.

“Alabama dropping to ten is wild. Tide has wins over 4 Georgia, 20 Tennessee, 14 Vandy and 22 Missouri. Yes the loss to FSU isn’t great, but thats two wins better than Notre Dame’s only CFP Top 25 win (15 USC) and the same 8-2 record,” argued a poster.

“What an absolute joke. Alabama has beaten more teams in this committee’s rankings than anyone else and we’re behind Notre Dame. Throw this system away man. All we heard all offseason and season was that SOS was going to mean something. What an absolute joke man,” suggested a poster.

“Notre Dame has no business being ranked ahead of Alabama and neither team has any business being ranked ahead of BYU…. Utterly ridiculous. We gotta start valuing wins and losses instead of confirming our biases with the rankings,” wrote a fan who thinks the Big 12 is being treated unfairly.

“Beyond stupid that Notre Dame is ahead of Miami or Alabama. They value head to head in Alabama OU but not ND Miami? They say that ND has better losses but why are we valuing losses more than wins? Is the cheat code to the CFP just losing to the only 2 ranked teams you play?” asked another.

Notre Dame is set to host 3-7 Syracuse on Saturday.

Alabama will have a chance to impress the CFP committee and prove it deserves a higher ranking than the Irish when it hosts a 3-8 Eastern Illinois (an FCS program) on Saturday.
