The Chicago Bulls saw the return of point guard Lonzo Ball to the NBA floor this season after years of setbacks injury-wise. However, it was fairly short-lived.
Ball suffered a wrist injury and has been trying to get back on the court. He was originally supposed to be out for a short time but the Bulls have learned the hard way with Ball.
Once again, it seems as if his injury issues are very much still in front of him. Bulls reporter K.C. Johnson reported an unfortunate injury update on the point guard, saying that he needs at least another week to return.
“Lonzo Ball worked out hard in New York, which Donovan said was “definitely a struggle.” Original optimistic target date was Sunday but Donovan said he needs at least another week. Ball is having trouble catching passes without pain.”
Ball has played in three games this year for the Bulls, averaging 4.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 0.3 blocks per game. He has shot 35.7 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from beyond the 3-point line as well.
His return to the NBA has been one of the better stories of the season so far but the Bulls know how quickly things can turn. The former UCLA product was expected to give the Bulls a strong option in the backcourt as he made his way back into NBA form.
All of his injuries have made him re-evaluate how he plays basketball and he opened up about his mindset prior to the season starting.
“I just play the game a lot smarter,” Ball noted of how he’s adjusted his game. “That’s really what I have to focus on — just keeping my IQ to be ahead of things.”
Ball is still just 27 years old and he is hopeful that he can continue building upon his NBA journey. The former No. 2 overall pick wants to show what he can do ahead of his impending free agency next summer.
While things haven’t gone his way over the past few years, there is still plenty of time for the guard to change the narrative. Chicago views Ball very highly and will allow him time to work himself back into the rotation when he returns.
This minor injury setback is unfortunate but it seems that both Ball and the Bulls may have dodged a bullet.
