Just a few weeks remain before the winner of American Idol 2025 is crowned. After weeks of auditions, “Hollywood Week,” and intense live shows, only eight contestants remain in the competition.
As the Top 10 took the stage on Sunday night for “Ladies’ Night,” the stakes were higher than ever, with only a handful of performances left to secure a spot in the grand finale. Here is what went down last night, who was eliminated, and what’s coming next.
What Happened in ‘American Idol’ Last Night?
On Sunday, May 4, American Idol celebrated “Ladies’ Night,” with the Top 10 contestants performing songs by iconic female artists. Country star Miranda Lambert served as the guest mentor, offering guidance as the singers vied for a spot in the Top 8. The evening also featured a special performance by Season 21 winner Abi Carter, who debuted her new single, “Burned.”
After the performances, America voted live, and host Ryan Seacrest revealed the Top 8 contestants advancing to the next round:
- Breanna Nix
- Mattie Pruitt
- Jamal Roberts
- John Foster
- Josh King
- Gabby Samone
- Slater Nalley
- Thunderstorm Artis

Who Was Eliminated?
Two contestants were eliminated during the May 4 episode:
- Kolbi Jordan: Jordan wanted to “shock people” with a rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain,” and despite praise from judges, it wasn’t enough to convince the public, who booted her out of the show.
- Canaan James Hill: Hill also went for something out of his comfort zone, performing Carrie Underwood’s “Love Wins.” Despite bringing impressive vocals, the performance was missing something and made Hill the second person to leave last night.
Both Kolbi and Canaan were recipients of the coveted Platinum Ticket earlier in the season, making their departures particularly surprising.
When Is the ‘American Idol’ Final?
The Season 23 finale of American Idol is scheduled for Sunday, May 18, 2025. The three-hour live event will air coast-to-coast, culminating in the announcement of this season’s winner.
What Prize Does the ‘American Idol’ Winner Get?
The winner of American Idol typically receives a recording contract and a cash prize. While exact figures can vary, reports suggest that the cash prize is around $125,000 to $250,000, often structured as an advance on the recording contract. The winner may receive half upon signing and the remainder after completing their debut album.
In tonight’s episode, airing Monday, May 5, where the Top 8 will participate in the “Judges’ Song Contest,” performing selections chosen by judges Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Carrie Underwood.
America will vote to determine who advances to the Top 6, with the judges having the opportunity to save one contestant, rounding out the Top 7.
