A brand new trailer has just released for the upcoming The Super Mario Bros Movie sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

The first movie, based on the hit Nintendo game series, was a box office smash, raking in a whopping $1.3 billion worldwide. It saw Mario, played by Chris Pratt, land in the Mushroom Kingdom, where he had to fight to defeat the evil Koopa King Bowser (Jack Black) to save his brother, Luigi (Charlie Day) and Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy).

With the sequel due to be released next year, there’s still not a lot yet known about the plot—but a newly-released trailer has given viewers a glimpse at what to expect.

Here’s everything we know about The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

What Happens in the New ‘Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ Trailer?

The trailer opens with Bowser, made minuscule and living in a tiny version of his castle under the close eye of Mario and Luigi, furiously painting a portrait of Mario as a skeleton—though still wearing his iconic red hat and mustache.

He then shows another “masterpiece” to the brothers: a romantic portrait of him and Princess Peach, which Mario decries as “trash.”

Then, a montage of what to expect from the film begins: shooting stars fly across the Mushroom Kingdom, and Peach and Toad jump into a star, where they’re catapulted across the galaxy. The characters explore scorching deserts, underwater kingdoms, pyramids and what appears to be the inside of arcade games.

Then comes the appearance of the long-awaited Bowser Jr., who arrives at the castle armed with a mace, and tells the Mario brothers he’s come to take his father back, as a fight begins.

Viewers are also introduced to Princess Rosalina, who fights back against an attempted abduction with a magic wand.

Benny Safdie Introduced As Bowser Jr., Brie Larson To Play Rosalina

Benny Safdie will play Bowser Jr., the son of Bowser and prince of the Koopas, who has appeared in multiple Mario games and spin-offs since his introduction in 2002’s Super Mario Sunshine. He regularly appears to help Bowser capture Princess Peach, or defeat Mario, Luigi or Yoshi.

Safdie is an American filmmaker and actor, who has directed multiple hit films, including 2019’s Uncut Gems, which he created with his brother, Josh Safdie.

As an actor, he has appeared in major films including Happy Gilmore 2, Oppenheimer, Good Time, and Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.

Brie Larson is to play the character of Princess Rosalina of the Comet Observatory, first introduced to the Mario franchise in 2007’s Super Mario Galaxy, on which the new film is based.

Larson has a number of high-profile titles under her belt, including major franchises, having starred as the titular character in Captain Marvel from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and in Kong: Skull Island.

She won an Oscar for Best Actress for her role in 2015’s Room.

Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black and Other Stars To Return

The top-billed cast for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is as follows.

  • Chris Pratt as Mario
  • Brie Larson as Rosalina
  • Jack Black as Bowser
  • Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr.

‘Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ Is Based on the Wii Game

In The Super Mario Galaxy Wii game, released in 2007, Mario heads on a mission through the universe to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser’s clutches. Much of the game is set in outer space, with Mario traveling through galaxies to collect Power Stars and defeating enemy bosses.

Rosalina is introduced as the guardian of the cosmos and caretaker of the Luma, a star-shaped creature.

It’s unclear how much the upcoming movie will follow the plot of the Wii game. Bowser Jr. does make some appearances as a boss in the game, but Bowser is the main villain.

By the end of the first Super Mario Bros Movie, Bowser has been shrunk and kept as a jar, and is still miniature in the trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie—whether he’ll stay that way remains to be seen.

When Will the ‘Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ Be Released?

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is due to hit theaters in April 2026.
