After failing to reach the playoffs last season, the Dallas Cowboys pulled off one of the biggest moves of the NFL offseason by acquiring George Pickens from the Pittsburgh Steelers. While many view this as a viable upgrade, some remain skeptical about how things will unfold for the star wideout in his new situation.
Ahead of the 2025 campaign, ESPN’s Bill Barnwell broke down 15 players who changed teams this offseason that could break out or flop. Among those to make an appearance on the list was the Cowboys’ new wideout.
“Pickens is going to see plenty of those routes. With CeeDee Lamb operating out of the slot, the Cowboys have needed an “X” receiver since they moved on from Amari Cooper before the 2022 season,” Barnwell wrote. “With Pickens in a contract year, he has every reason to be motivated in Dallas. Few players have a wider range of potential outcomes in 2025; he could be a top-15 wideout or end the season on another roster.”

Though he’s had his issues on and off the field, Pickens is still capable of being an impactful piece for any NFL offense. In 14 games with the Steelers last season, he racked up 900 yards and three touchdowns. Heading into a new situation, his production is sure to see a sizable increase.
Standing at 6-foot-3, 200 pounds, Pickens has the physical makeup of a receiver who thrives on the outside. As Barnwell mentioned, he is a player who has the potential to come in and fill a void for Dallas within their receiver core. Also, with CeeDee Lamb garnering a lot of attention, Pickens is going to have opportunities to make defenses pay on a weekly basis.
Another thing Pickens has going for him is that he is joining an offense that loves to attack through the air. When healthy, Dak Prescott is regularly among the league leaders when it comes to passing yards. Looking to bounce back from an injury-ridden 2024 season, the Cowboys QB will surely be aiming to return to form this year.
Playing for one of the most historic franchises in sports comes with its own set of pressures and expectations. That said, if Pickens can take care of his business, it should work out well for him long-term.
Between his drama with the Steelers last year and playing out the final season of his contract, Pickens has a lot to prove in 2025. The pieces are in place for him to thrive in Dallas, all that’s left to do is for him to step up and answer the call.
