Texas Warning Issued as Temperatures Expected to Hit 111

Texas is bracing for a record-breaking heat wave this week, with temperatures forecast to reach up to 111 degrees Fahrenheit in some areas.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued extreme heat warnings for several regions across the state, including Austin, San Antonio, and surrounding counties.

Why It Matters

In May, temperatures exceeding 100 degrees are relatively rare in Texas, although most common in southern regions near the Mexico border.

San Antonio has only recorded May temperatures above 102 degrees six times over the past 140 years, according to meteorologists at The San Antonio Express-News.

Excessive heat can pose serious health risks to individuals working outside and the vulnerable. Authorities are urging people to stay out of the sun, hydrate frequently, and check on older adults.

What To Know

The NWS has issued an extreme heat warning for much of south central Texas on Wednesday, warning of “dangerously hot conditions” and temperatures reaching 111 degrees.

Heat advisories have also been issued in a number of surrounding counties, with temperatures set to reach 105 degrees.

“Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events,” the NWS said. “Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.”

It added: “Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles for even a moment. Car interiors will very quickly reach lethal temperatures.”

Texas’ temperatures this week will rival some of the hottest places on earth. Death Valley, California, has an average high temperature of 100.5 degrees in May.
