Trump’s Approval Rating Plummets With Nearly All Key Groups: Poll

Donald Trump

President Donald Trump‘s approval rating is in the negatives with nearly all key groups, a new poll from Pew Research Center finds.

Why It Matters

Trump has routinely touted positive approval ratings and polling during news conferences and campaign rallies throughout his political career.

When the president returned to the White House in January, he coasted in with positive numbers. But his approval ratings have dipped significantly in the last few weeks, notably amid sweeping tariff announcements. Trump later walked back the tariffs by implementing a 90-day pause on the majority.

Sliding in the polls could ultimately hinder Trump’s political clout in an already highly polarized climate and potentially hurt Republican chances in the upcoming 2026 midterms.

What To Know

In the poll, Trump has an overall approval rating of 40 percent compared to a disapproval rating of 59 percent. The survey shows that 44 percent of men approve of the job the president is doing compared to 55 percent who disapprove.

Trump fares worse with women, as 37 percent approve of the job he’s doing compared to 62 percent who disapprove.

The president’s approval rating is underwater with white, Hispanic and Asian Americans but none more glaring than his approval rating with Black U.S. adults. The survey shows that only 14 percent of Black Americans approve of the job Trump is doing as commander in chief, versus 82 percent who disapprove.

The survey was taken from April 7 through April 13 among 3,589 respondents. The poll has a margin of error of 1.8 percent.

The poll also details Trump’s approval rating among age groups. Again, Trump is in the negatives with every group. Among those ages 18 to 29, 36 percent approve of the job Trump is doing compared to 63 percent who disapprove.

Similarly, those ages 30 to 49 approve of the job Trump is doing at a 37 percent clip compared to 62 percent who disapprove.

The president has only landed in the positives among Republicans polled or self-reported 2024 Trump voters.

“Trump’s rating has dropped 7 points among adults overall, and most subgroups have seen a similarly sized decline,” Pew Research Center says in the poll.

What People Are Saying

Democratic pollster Matt McDermott on X, formerly Twitter, on Wednesday: “Three months into Trump’s term and Pew finds his approval rating has plummeted Approve: 40% (-7% vs. Feb) Disapprove: 59% (+8% vs. Feb) His approval rating ties his rating at this point in his first term — worse than any other president in recorded history.”

Political analyst and Florida Atlantic University professor Craig Agranoff told Newsweek via text message on Wednesday: “It’s been a rough month for the Trump administration, no question. The Pew poll showing him underwater with most groups tracks with other surveys pointing to unease over tariffs and economic jitters.”

Agranoff added, “April’s been tough, with policy rollouts hitting legal and public resistance. Does Trump prioritize polls? Historically, he’s been sensitive to them, but his focus seems more on pushing his agenda than chasing approval numbers. Time will tell if this dip forces a pivot.”

Pew Research Center on Trump’s polling regarding his ability to handle key issues: “Today, fewer than half of Americans express confidence in Trump to handle most issues – ranging from trade to foreign policy to abortion. Across all 10 issues asked about on the survey, adults are more likely to say they have little or no confidence in Trump than to say they are very or somewhat confident in him.”
