How Yankees Trade For $56 Million Cy Young Winner Could Push New York Over Top

Earlier this week, I put together four separate trade packages the New York Yankees could swing in order to cement themselves atop the loaded American League East.

The biggest trade of the batch was a massive deal to steal the 2022 National League Cy Young winner, Sandy Alcántara, away from the Miami Marlins.

Here are the full details to the hypothetical trade idea:

• Yankees receive RHP Sandy Alcántara
• Marlins receive OF Spencer Jones, RHP Ben Hess, SS/2B Roderick Arias, LHP Brock Selvidge

There’s a chance the Yankees aren’t willing to give up the prospects it would take to land an ace like Alcántara, but if they are willing to do so, this is the kind of package that would get it done.

The headliner of the deal is superstar prospect Spencer Jones. Jones is blocked by players like Cody Bellinger, Jasson Dominguez, and Aaron Judge in New York, so he’s unlikely to be given a shot in the Bronx unless somebody gets hurt. Even at that point, the Yankees would likely use Trent Grisham over him right now. New York also has prospect Everson Pereira waiting for a shot at the big leagues.

Roderick Arias is blocked by infielders like Anthony Volpe, Jazz Chisholm Jr., and Jorbit Vivas. Ben Hess is fighting an uphill battle to earn time on the mound within an organization that tends to buy its pitchers rather than develop them. Brock Selvidge is in the same boat as Hess, but he has a bit lower of a ceiling.

Either way, the Yankees would much rather have Alcántara for the next few seasons than this package of prospects. Pairing an ace like him alongside Gerrit Cole, Max Fried, Carlos Rodon, and Luis Gil for the next few years would give the Bronx Bombers one of the best rotations in the game.
