An orange cat’s reaction to waking up from anesthesia has gone viral, as internet users can’t cope with the spaced-out feline “trying to reconnect to the server.”
As a veterinary technician, Julie Belanger often takes her two cats into work to do a full dental cleaning when they’re due. However, these cleans have to be done under full anesthesia, which is always quite an interesting ride for her orange cat, Big Mac.
Belanger, from MontrĂ©al, Canada captured a video of Big Mac around five hours after he woke up from the anesthetic. She told Newsweek he was “alert and ambulatory,” but nonetheless, incredibly “woozy from the drugs.”
In the hilarious video, the cat is sitting behind Belanger looking very zoned out and staring into space.
“Waking up from anesthesia is different for each patient; some wake up slowly, some more rapidly, some are hyper-reactive after waking up,” Belanger said. “For Big Mac, the recovery was rather smooth. The effects lasted for a few hours post-op. Coming back home that night, he ate and slept as usual and was back to normal the next day.”

Belanger couldn’t resist sharing the video of him “looking spacey” on his dedicated TikTok account (@bigmacthemenace). To her surprise, the clip has taken the internet by storm and gone viral with over 10.6 million views and more than 2.4 million likes at the time of writing.
While internet users can’t get enough of the orange cat, Belanger joked that it’s not actually too dissimilar to his usual self.
She continued: “He’s a goofy cat and spaces out from time to time, even without anesthesia. He was very funny in the video, I think the sedation just made it more obvious.”
Big Mac normally likes to roam around the veterinary clinic when he goes to his owner’s work for checkups and vaccines. Several hours after the anesthetic wore off, he was finally able to perk up and explore her workplace once more.
Since sharing the clip online, Belanger has been blown away by the viral response. Many of the commenters were left wondering what was going through Big Mac’s head, which is something she finds herself contemplating regularly.
“The reactions have been so positive, and I’ve loved reading all the comments. I was not expecting so much traffic and love on this video, but I’m grateful that Big Mac could put a smile on people’s faces,” Belanger told Newsweek.
In the days since Big Mac became an internet sensation, the video has amassed over 6,700 comments on TikTok already. He certainly left social media users in hysterics, as plenty of commenters joked about which of life’s big questions he may have been thinking about.
One comment reads: “Him: omg have I been a cat this whole time.”
Another TikTok user wrote: “He’s trying to remember which life he’s currently living.”
Another person joked: “he is seeing sounds, smelling colors, and tasting numbers… bro is in SPACE.”
While one commenter added: “Little man is not here right now. Straight to voicemail.”
