New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza on Friday chose a pitcher who hasn’t started a major league game since 2018 to take the ball on Opening Day.
Clay Holmes, who signed a three-year, $38 million free agent contract in December, leaving the Yankees for the Mets, was attempting to convert from the bullpen to the rotation in his first season across town. Not only is the conversion an early success — it will lead Holmes to take the ball on March 27 against the Houston Astros.
Holmes’ last major league start was in 2018 with the Pittsburgh Pirates. From 2019-2024, he pitched exclusively out of the bullpen. Over the last three season, he saved 74 games as the Yankees’ closer.
