Some days, Wordle is harder to solve than others, which is why Newsweek has rounded up clues for you to beat the game.
Josh Wardle released the brainteaser to the public in October 2021. Just three months later, it was acquired by The New York Times for an undisclosed seven-figure fee, though users don’t need a subscription to play.
How to Play ‘Wordle’
Much of Wordle‘s appeal is its simplicity: players get six attempts to figure out five-letter word of the day, and a color system helps to narrow down what it could be.
If a player guesses a letter that is in the correct place, that tile will turn green. If a player guesses a letter that appears in the word but is not in the spot, it will turn yellow. Lastly, if the letter does not appear in the word at all, then the tile will turn gray.
Wardle previously told Newsweek that, while the puzzle’s format may seem “arbitrary,” he “tested different word lengths and experimented with the number of tries that players were allowed.”
“Through that process of refinement, I figured out that five letters and six tries was the ideal sweet spot,” Wardle said in 2022. “It’s just limited enough to feel challenging and to make you think, but, most of the time, people still manage to solve it. So, you feel a real sense of real accomplishment.”
Even still, the software engineer admitted he doesn’t always conquer the game right away.
“[My partner] and I play it on the couch together each morning. She will consistently get it in three goes, which is way, way better than I can ever hope to achieve. I normally need at least 4 or 5 attempts,” Wardle added.
