Republican Lisa Murkowski Reacts to ‘Shocking’ Trump-Zelensky Meeting

Sen. Lisa Murkowski

The Oval Office confrontation between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday has drawn sharp criticism from Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski, who described the exchange as “shocking” and expressed concern about the direction of U.S. foreign policy under Trump’s leadership.

During the meeting, Trump berated Zelensky, accusing him of insufficient gratitude for U.S. military support and pressuring him to negotiate a peace deal with Russia under terms dictated by the Trump administration. The heated encounter ended with Zelensky being abruptly dismissed from the White House, prompting international concern over America’s commitment to its allies.

Why It Matters

The public confrontation underscored a stark shift in the U.S. stance on Ukraine, with Trump and Vice President JD Vance reportedly signaling a potential end to military assistance. The event caused alarm among European allies, with some leaders stating the U.S. can no longer be considered a reliable partner in global security matters.

Murkowski’s reaction highlights the growing divide within the Republican Party over continued support for Ukraine, as some lawmakers push for an isolationist approach while others advocate for sustained aid.

What to Know

The meeting between Trump and Zelensky appeared to be going relatively well until it very quickly wasn’t, after the latter pointed out Russian President Vladimir Putin broke previous ceasefire deals and Vance said it was “disrespectful for Zelensky to come into the Oval Office, litigating in front of the American media.” Trump later wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, that Zelensky “is not ready for peace” and would be welcomed back only when he was.

Murkowski, known for her independent stance within the GOP, took to X, formerly Twitter, to express her disappointment in the president. “This week started with administration officials refusing to acknowledge that Russia started the war in Ukraine,” she said. “It ends with a tense, shocking conversation in the Oval Office and whispers from the White House that they may try to end all U.S. support for Ukraine.”

The senior senator from Alaska warned that abandoning Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia could have dire consequences.

What People Are Saying

Murkowski said: “I am sick to my stomach as the administration appears to be walking away from our allies and embracing Putin, a threat to democracy and U.S. values around the world.”

Republican Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska said: “A bad day for America’s foreign policy. Ukraine wants independence, free markets and rule of law. It wants to be part of the West. Russia hates us and our Western values. We should be clear that we stand for freedom.”

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said: “What I saw in the Oval Office was disrespectful, and I don’t know if we can ever do business with Zelensky again. He either needs to resign or send somebody over that we can do business with, or he needs to change.”

Republican Senator Mike Lee of Utah said: “Thank you for standing up for OUR COUNTRY and putting America first, President Trump and Vice President Vance!”

What Happens Next

Ahead of a European security summit, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Sunday that Britain and France had agreed to work on a Ukraine ceasefire plan which would then be presented to the U.S.
